8.7 - Mac software I use

On the following pages are capsule reviews of software that I find to be not just useful, but indispensable. Most of these applications have found their way into my daily workflow and I would be hard-pressed to remove them. My intent here is to let you know what has worked for me, and why, so you can benefit from the hunting down and testing I've already done.

For almost every application listed here, there are several that I have tried and discarded because of glitches, insufficient functionality, or for reasons of efficiency. I'm not much of a user-interface prude, so you'll find applications listed that aren't outright beautiful, but I do think that the functionality makes up for that — that's why they are here.

With very few exceptions, the fact that an application is listed here means that I am 100% happy with it. Those exceptions will be programs like OmniWeb that show enormous promise and/or functionality and which I use in spite of whatever issue(s) is/are causing me trouble, even when there are alternatives out there. In the rare case when I give something a lower rating here, please keep in mind that if I thought it wouldn't be of significant use to others, I wouldn't have listed it at all.
