You can create and maintain a micro-collection of minerals much more easily than you can a full-size collection. In fact, you're a lot more likely to find interesting crystals and formations at the micro scales. Obviously, they take less space than do cabinet- or display-sized pieces. But they cost less if you're buying, and they are a lot easier to find. The odds of finding a cabinet- or display-sized specimen "just anywhere" are almost zero, especially in developed areas. But you can find micro specimens in driveways, at building sites, in road cuts, along creeks and rivers... almost anywhere, really. Just keep a pocket magnifying glass with you at all times, and you'll be simply amazed at what you can find.
